| Ombudsman Plight of pre-1988 pensioners It is understood that a 76 percent salary increase is to be given to public servants. In this connection, I beg to submit the following on behalf of the pre-1988 pensioners: To site my own case, I am a retired Chief Station Master. I retired at Gampola Railway Station on 08-06-1984. I was on the maximum of the class I salary scale applicable to that grade. I am now drawing a monthly pension of Rs. 5,368, inclusive of the recent increase of Rs. 575. This amount is not sufficient to meet my food bill, leaving aside clothing and shelter. My subordinates, who retired after 1988 are drawing much bigger pensions. What happened to the B. C. Perera and the Wanasingha Commission reports? Who is to be blamed for the sad plight of the pre-1988 pensioners? I pray that this matter will receive the kind notice of the new Prime Minister. |
