Hope and promise on the horizon?

It is encouraging to learn that the tone of the new government will steer the country in the direction of discipline and order at a time when we have been ravaged by violence and lack of civility to fellow beings. It is refreshing that the new leadership has a vision and desire to trickle top down discipline— a much-needed change in our society today.

It follows that when the leadership exudes an aura of calm and decent conduct, the country and masses follow. Let’s hope this will be the case in reality and that a leadership of this quality will be able to survive pressures that have tilted the scales in the opposite direction beyond the threshold of human endurance. So far the indications are promising. We hope it will remain enduring.

It is of course not possible to please all sectors of the country. If politicians, businessmen and all citizens are focused on the country and its prosperity achieved by lawful and fair means, all can share the benefit.

We need to inculcate the need for placing the country first before myopic selfish motives are fulfilled. Infuse this top down and bottom up starting with little school children to be taught that what ever they do should reflect on our collective benefit as a nation. Even teaching little children to pick up a piece of paper that litters their environment will help us to live in a clean nation. Similarly, teach children to perform at least one act of kindness however small, toward each other irrespective of race, religion or other difference. Schools must encourage children to discuss what they can do and reflect on their thoughts and actions beyond just listening to what the teacher has to say. Respect for diversity is the best ingredient we can give to our children in their education.

It will not only teach tolerance for differences, it can enhance learning from one another. Teaching children to make a conscious effort to do so on a daily basis will go a long way and we will see a kinder more compassionate nation. If we start today, the results are assured tomorrow. Every bit helps in this hour of national reconciliation.
