Iodine deficiency will lead to a spectrum of abnormalities in the human body such as goitre (enlargement of the thyroid gland), mental retardation, still births sluggishness and dry skin.

According to medical reports, 70% of Sri Lankans are at risk of having iodine deficiency. The very fact that made the state to enforce a law in 1995 to incorporate adequate amount (25-50 mg/kg) of iodine to all edible salt products.

The SLS certification ensures that SLS marked iodised salts carry the required amount of iodine as well as all other requirements laid down in the Sri Lankan Standards Specification for Edible Common Salt (SLS 79). In this manner, the consumer is guarded not only against iodine deficiency, but also from any other harmful effects, which may be caused from substandard products.
