Local Government elections covering 14 Municipal Councils, 37 Urban Councils and 258 Pradeshiya Sabhas will be held on March 1. The Cabinet Sub Committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramesinghe to examine the possibility of holding local elections has recommended that polls should be held on March 1, this year.

Government sources said that the Commissioner of Elections could be briefed on the decision shortly and it is expected that all political parties that would contest the poll could meet the Elections Commission during the coming fortnight to discuss election matters.

The Committee headed by local government and Home Affairs Minister, Alick Aluwihare included Ministers Karu Jayasuriya, G.L. Peris and W.A.M. Lokubandara.

The Committee discussed the issue at length with the Attorney General, K.C.Kamalasabeysan , a news release from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Local Government said.

The local polls would include the North and the East and all necessary steps would be taken to conduct a free and fair election, Minister Aluwihare said.
