| Govt. strengthening weakened LTTE, accuses JBP The Jathika Bhikshu Peramuna (JBP) has accused the United National Party government of planning peace discussions with the LTTE after giving into all conditions laid down by the Tigers. It also warned that actions by the government were strengthening a weakened organisation. In a press release issued this week, the front states that the conditions so agreed to by the government were withholding of army operations against the LTTE under a cease-fire agreement, removal of security checkpoints thereby stopping checks on movement of suspicious persons, allowing hitherto prohibited items into uncleared areas and accepting Norway as a facilitator. The most pressing issue, according to the JBP, was the attempt by the LTTE to get itself de-proscribed. When considering the present international attitude towards the LTTE, it is clear that the organisation is heading for a complete defeat, the JBP pointed out. But the UNP government is now proceeding in a way that would strengthen the LTTE. The JBP appealed to all communities to join hands with the aim of defeating the attitude of the government, accusing the latter of taking actions in the interest of power without forethought or wisdom. |
