Gampola meet Kalutara in final

The finals of the Senior League Championship 2000/2001 between Gampola league and Kalutara league will kick off at 4.30 p.m. at the Weegulawatte ground, Gampola on January 5.

This match will be vital for both these outstation teams. This is the first time that both these teams are participating in the final at this tournament.

In this Championship 43 leagues from all parts, of the island vied for honours. This tournament was organised and conducted by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.

The Minister of Plantation and Industries Lakshman Kiriela will be the guest of honour at the awards ceremony. The winners of the Championship will receive Rs.50,000 in cash, with the runner-up receiving Rs.25,000.

The Gampola league played three matches which were against Matale FL, Colombo FL, Nawalapitiya FL, and beat them by 2 - 1, 4 - 1, 5 - 0 respectively. Finally they defeated Dehiwala/Mt. Lavinia league in the semi-finals by 4 goals to 1 in a match which went on to extra time.

Kalutara FL beat Mannar FL by 3 goals to one in the semi-finals, and also earned wins over Sri Jayawardenapura/ Kotte FL, Wennappuwa FL and Mercantile FL.
