Make local government members accountable

I am a resident of Wellawatte, I do not know who the Municipal Councillor for my ward is or who parliamentarians for my electorate are. There are very many shortcomings in my ward and my several letters to the Mayor have not been replied to. Nor has any action been taken on them.

The functions of these members are not defined, except for the fact they should attend monthly meetings of their local authority at least once in three months to retain their membership. There is no duty list and no obligation to do anything. But they are being paid.

These representative must be detailed to nurse their wards and made answerable to the people for their lapses. The elections to the local government institutions too need to be reviewed.
