'Police responsible for thuggery during past weeks'

Gokarella Corr.
"Galewela police should be responsible for all the incidents that took place in the area during the past few weeks. The police failed to implement the law properly. When I went to the police station prior to the election to lodge an entry, I was put into the cell." This was said by UNP councillor R. R. G. Alahakoon of the Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha at its monthly meeting held recently.

M. G. R. Jayathilleke, the Chairman of the Sabha presided.

The Chairman said "that there were some minor incidents prior to the election, but later on there was great destruction after the election. My house too was attacked by thugs. Today I have become a displaced person," he added.

Leader of the Opposition R. M. Wijethunge Banda said that he too was assaulted by a gang of thugs prior to the election and was admitted to hospital.

Councillor Sunil Kumara Ekanayake (PA) said that sufficient development work had not been carried out although the sabha had spent a lot of money.

Councillor A. M. Ariff (UNP) said that steps should be taken against the politician who had encroached on the public well at Puwakpitiya Village. Councillor Sarath Jayasinghe (PA) said that political thuggery should be stopped at least now.

The budget for the year 2002 was passed at this meeting.
