Ajit Jayaratne for Washington

Mr. Ajit Jayaratne, a former Chairman of Forbes and Walker Ltd., is tipped to be Sri Lanka’s new Ambassador in Washington succeeding Dr. Warnasena Rasaputra, a former Governor of the Central Bank who had long served there, authoritative governmental sources said.

Jayaratne, a professional accountant, serves on the boards of directors of several companies quoted on the Colombo Stock Exchange.

These sources also confirmed that Mr. C. Mahendran, a retired member of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service who had ambassadorial postings including Japan during his career, will be the new Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Mahendran was elected to the Colombo Municipal Council on the UNP ticket but was unsuccessful in his bid or parliament in 2000. He held a high profile position within the UNP on foreign affairs.

The sources also confirmed that Mr. Mangala Moonesinghe, High Commissioner in London, will return to New Delhi, his previous posting.

Moonesinghe, an MP both on the LSSP and SLFP tickets, accepted a diplomatic appointment after he failed to be elected to the 1994 parliament.
