Three main highways in the North are to be re-opened before February 15, Defence sources said yesterday.

The Kandy-Jaffna (A9) highway will be one such highway that will be opened before February 15. The checkpoint’s necessary for the re-opening of the highway are already under construction.

The sources said that the Uyilankulam road in Mannar will be opened tomorrow (31). Civilians in Mannar will be able to travel to the uncleared areas in the North after the opening of this road.

The authorities have also decided to re-open the Vavuniya-Kabithigollawa road closed for traffic since 1992.

A bicycle race called "Sama Papedi Savariya" is also being organised to coincide with the opening of the road the sources added.
