LTTE demands taxes on fishing boats

The LTTE have asked fishermen in Kalkudah to pay taxes for their boats on a monthly basis with effect from on Wednesday, security sources said. According to these sources the tax for small boats amounts to Rs. 1,000 while for large boats the tax would be Rs. 3,000.

If the fishermen fail to pay these amounts their boats would be confiscated by the LTTE and taken to Vakarai and Kathirvel areas which are under LTTE control at present, security sources said. If the boats are to be returned the fishermen would have to pay a sum of Rs. 100,000 to the LTTE.

Meanwhile, civilian sources in the east said that lorries transporting fish from the east to Colombo are being asked to pay the LTTE a tax of Rs. 1,000,000. — (DJ)
