PA PC candidate, supporter remanded

Hasalaka PA Provincial council candidate R. B. Herath and a supporter were remanded till March 4, by the Mahiyangana Magistrate, for allegedly threatening at gun point the husband of UNP candidate Chandra Abeykoon on Wednesday around 9.30am at Hasalaka.

Hasalaka police said that a complaint has been made by the victim, A. M. Kudabandara. The incident had occured opposite the Co-oporative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) situated on the Kandy - Hasalaka Road.

Police said that the incident had occurred when the complainant had met Herath near the CWE. At that time the supporter identified as M.G Gunadasa had been waiting in a vehicle belonging to Herath.

Gunadasa is also a contestant in the forthcoming local government elections.

Police have recovered the 3.8 mm revolver used by the suspects. It belonged to PA candidate Herath. At the time of the recovery the suspect had been unable to produce the license of the revolver.

Police said Herath was arrested for an incident which took place in the last General Elections. The supporter, who was arrested, is reported to be involved earlier in criminal activity.
