Dinesh rejects proposal for committee to monitor MoU

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader MP, Dinesh Gunawardene said on Thursday that the PA parliamentary opposition would not even consider Mr. Batty Weerakoon’s proposal to set up a Parliamentary committee to monitor the Government - LTTE MoU.

"MEP as a member of PA and a member of the parliamentary opposition after taking note of the proposal put forward by the General Secretary of the LSSP, Batty Weerakoon to set up a parliamentary select committee chaired by leader of the opposition to monitor the implementation of the cease-fire agreement, rejects this proposal in toto," he said.

Mr. Weerakoon requested the Prime Minister to set up a parliamentary select committee to monitor the implementation of the cease-fire agreement and a national commission comprising representatives of all political parties with the right to decide on matters concerning the implementation to play a healthy role in the process. He pointed out in his letter to the Prime Minister that the provision to halt forced conscription, extortion, and theft carried out by the LTTE was not a guarantee.

"I would like to add that the PA Parliamentary opposition would not even consider Mr. Weerakoon’s proposition to monitor the Government- LTTE so called agreement which has become a threat to the savereignty of the country and division of the country," the MEP Leader stressed. (DJ)
