Criminals must be hanged

The letter ‘JVP could be the third force’ by J. T. Mirando of Negombo in your journal of February 26 refers. Whilst I endorse most of what Mirando had mentioned in point form requesting the JVP to implement should they come to power, may I be permitted to refer such deeds to be implemented by the UNF Government - if not all - at least some of them since, whether they be done by the JVP or UNF, it does not matter, as long as it benefits the people.

In addition to Mirando’s list, may I also request the Government to reintroduce the death penalty in whatever form - by hanging, electric chair, even by stoning to death as in Saudi Arabia or by lethal injection, as I feel that murderers are now holding sway in the country.

Since other crimes such as abduction, robbery, rape, drug trafficking etc. are also daily occurrences, I feel that very effective laws and stringent punishments should be introduced if we are to arrest the fast escalating rate of crimes.

We know that the Government’s hands are full due to the mismanagement of the country’s affairs by the previous regime but would be grateful if due consideration is given to our requests.

Failure of the UNF Government to pay heed to at least some of our requests in the greater interest of all Sri Lankans will compel us to give serious thought to look for a third force.
