Youth abducted by LTTE found dead

A young Tamil, who was alleged to have been abducted by LTTE cadres while he was at home, was found dead due to gun shot injuries in the general area of Sampur, about 12 km south of Trincomalee on March 11, 2002, according to a complaint made by the next of kin of the deceased to police, the government said yesterday.

Both brother and sister of S. Pulendra Raja (27) of Mosque Road, Muttur 3 had complained to the Muttur police station that their brother’s (Pulendra’s) dead body was said to have been recovered by the LTTE office from a location in the jungles in uncleared areas on 11 March.

A message sent by the LTTE office in Sampur had informed them to receive the remains of their brother, whose dead body with gun shot injuries had reportedly been found by the LTTE inside jungles.

Initial investigations confirmed that Pulendra Raja (27) had been abducted by armed LTTE men on March 10 while he was at home, according to the complaint lodged at the police station.

Later, Pulendra Raja’s brother and sister who went to the LTTE office in Sampur had brought the dead body home on 11 March around 5.30 p.m.

The Muttur police is conducting investigations.

On information received, troops recovered a can filled with approximately 2 kg of outdated explosives dumped in an abandoned house in the general area of Suthumalai, about 6.5 km north of Jaffna town on March 11 around 1.30 p.m.

On inspection it was revealed that the explosives found were obsolete.

Later, the recovered item was destroyed by Engineer troops.

Three LTTE cadres in their uniforms carrying a T 56 weapon had arrived at the observation post in the general area of Ethawetunuwewa, about 6 km North of Welioya on March 11 around 11.15 a.m.

When questioned, these LTTE cadres had said that they wanted to visit the Ethawetunuwewa village.

However, troops had explained to them that they were not supposed to enter the cleared areas in uniforms with weapons.

Later, the LTTE men had gone back to uncleared areas.

Four LTTE cadres, who arrived on two motor bicycles on March 10 around 6.30 p.m. had attempted to extort money from a Muslim trader in the general area of Valachchenai about 29 km Northwest of Batticaloa.
