The true story behind the ‘Kandos Magic Frisbee’

Every object has a history and behind that history an inventor, the person who thought it up first.

But, would you believe, if we say that the birth of this Frisbee was in a baking company in New England?

Yes, the Frisbie Baking Company (1871-1958) of Bridgeport made pies, that were sold to many New England Colleges. The consumers (hungry college students) soon discovered that the empty pie tins can be tossed and caught, providing endless hours of fun. Finally many colleges claimed to be the home of ‘he who was first to fling’, while an undergraduate, by the name of Elihu Frisbie claimed that he was the inventor, as he had flung a chapel collection tray out into the campus one day, and that is how the name "Frisbie" was in play. But, this story has been denied, by the original Frisbie Baking Company as they had the name "Frisbee Pies" engraved in their urns. Thus, the word "Frisbee" was coined as the common name for the toy.

In 1948, a Los Angeles building inspector named Walter Frederick Morrison invented the plastic version of the Frisbie that could fly further and with better accuracy than a tin pie plate, which was named as the "Pluto Platter". This Pluto Platter has become the basic design of all Frisbies today.

The Wham - O Company, who introduced the Hula Hoop, Super Ball, and the Water Wiggle, saw Morrison’s Pluto Platter in late 1955, and convinced to sell them the right to his design. Subsequently the Wham - O Company began production in 1957 of more Pluto Platters.

The next year the original Frisbie Baking Company shut down and coincidently Fred Morrison was awarded a patent for his flying disk.

Today, Morrison receives over one million dollars as royalties for his invention.

Today, the Frisbie playing has become a very popular sport in many parts of the world, and the word Frisbee is the catchy new name given by Knerr (Wham - O) to help increase sales.

Thus, Kandos, who takes initiative in of introducing novel ideas to the younger generation from its inception, takes pride in introducing this novel experience by the name "KANDOS MAGIC FRISBEE" to Sri Lankan children.

We spoke to many famous personnel, engaged in different fields in the country to find out their views and ideas about introducing a play mate like Frisbee to the younger population in Sri Lanka.

Channa Perera — Director of Children’s Programmes, actor — soap operas/films, said that: "Frisbee" is a novel idea to the individualized, isolated children population in the modern computerized world. It’s tragic to see how children are becoming more self-centered, more possessive when living in the society. The words like friendship and relationship would be unfamiliar to our children one day, if we allow them to build-up relationships only with machines. Thus, introduction of a playmate like Frisbee is an ideal timely idea, and undoubtedly Kandos deserves the honour of taking the initiative of introducing such a fun-filled novel idea to our child population".

So, keep in touch with KANDOS MAGIC FRISBEE. We will bring you more ideas, more news of FRISBEE — the timely induction.
