Trincomalee, March 19: The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) today declared this eastern port town and a major Sri Lankan naval base the capital of a future, independent Tamil Eelam.

The declaration was made at a rally at the beachfront attended by about 50,000 Tamils. The participants in the "Pongu Tamil" or Tamil upsurge rally wore badges bearing an image of the LTTE chief, Velupillai Prabh-akaran. They raised their hands in a Nazi-type salute as they swore allegiance to him and the LTTE.

The participants, carrying cutouts of the guerrilla leader, shouted slogans demanding self-determination for the Tamils and a Tamil homeland in the Northeast.

All government offices, schools and private establishments had been ordered shut by the LTTE, as the government looked the other way.

The rally was aimed at telling the international community that the LTTE was not merely a militant organisation but a movement meant to restore democracy and human rights.
