Missing women’s rights for peace

As a woman, I was disappointed that Women’s Day March 8th concentrated more on calling for participation in the Peace Process which I think is in competent hands than the grievances of women.

Step into any 138 bus on the High Level Road or the Avissawella/ Fort train during peak hours, morning or evening and you will notice the immense difficulties we, women have in travelling to and from our work places. The age of chivalry is long dead. Women are today victims of perverts and pickpockets.

Instead of demonstrating around the Lipton Circus, shouldn’t we demand and clamour for ‘women only’ buses during peak hours e.g. 2 buses at 7 a.m. and 7.30 a.m. and at 5 p.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Similarly, separate compartments can be reserved for women in trains during these rush hours.

If these publicity seeking urban women don’t agitate for it, we must do so and get the Transport Minister to do it.
