Armed Tamil groups hand in weapons

By Norman Palihawadane
All armed Tamil political parties in the north, other than the LTTE, had handed over their weapons yesterday to the army at their respective offices, Wanni Army Commander, Major Gen. Chula Seneviratne, said.

The political parties that handed over their arms were PLOTE, EPRLF and the EPDP. The TELO had handed over its weapons earlier.

This is in keeping with the Ceasefire Agreement between the government and LTTE facilitated by Norway, he said.

Among the arms handed over were LM guns, T-56 guns and others of different makes.

The branches of these Tamil political parties in the Batticaloa district are expected to hand over their weapons to the army today, army sources said.
