Indian fishermen released

Jaffna Magistrate R. P. Vignarajah on Friday released 29 Indian fishermen who were in detention for entering Sri Lankan waters illegally, a Foreign Ministry source said yesterday.

The source said that the ministry earlier requested the navy headquarters and police to inquire into their cases after India’s External Affairs Ministry raised the issue.

The magistrate has directed the navy to release the fishermen and their boats and hand them over to Indian naval authorities, the source said.
