|Extradition deal between SL, UAE to be signed shortly
Discussion on an extradition agreement of fugitive offenders between Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) commission of terrorists offences was held in Abu Dhabi from April 28 to 30.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the authorities of the two countries have been pursuing for sometime the conclusion of this agreement.
"The Agreement contains certain safeguards particularly in relation to the non extradition of citizens of the two countries and the death penalty, given the differences in the legal systems and types of punishments in the UAE and Sri Lanka. Provision has also been made for the extradition of persons committing or attempting to commit any act which would constitute an offence within the scope of International Conventions. The focus of this particular provision is on the commission of terrorist offences."
The Agreement is due to be formally signed within the coming months, after receiving parliamentary approval.
The Sri Lankan delegation led by Solicitor General C. R. de Silva included Mr. S. N. Senanayake, Senior Legal Assistant of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs S. N. Senanayake and Second Secretary of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi, Pradeepa Saram.
