Make extradition Sword of Damocles

At the Silver Jubilee Executive Awards night of the Maharajah Organisation, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his address, said, inter alia, that the path chosen by his Government for peace was the only one and there was no other way. But having talks with the LTTE, whose track record we know, without asking them to surrender all their weapons first is fraught with great danger having regard to what happened to Rajiv Gandhi, Ranasinghe Premadasa and Chandrika B. Kumaratunga, who tread on the same path.

To save his own life, I wish to bring to the notice of our Prime Minister that there is another path shown by no less a person than the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and that path - that ‘modus operandi’ is more sure and certain. She said, "There is already a request made by India to extradite Velupillai Prabhakaran. If Sri Lanka is not in a position to do so, let it invite the Indian troops (the fourth Largest army of the world) to invade Wanni and bring Prabhakaran to India, where he is an accused in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case."

Even if our Prime Minister decides not to adopt Jayalalitha’s suggestion just now owing to the forthcoming peace talks, which he has already arranged, we must thank Jayalalitha for her suggestion as it will be like the sword of Democles on the LTTE delegation at the peace conference, preventing them from putting forward impossible demands like Eelam or in the alternative powers based on the Timpu principles, which I may inform your readers as follows:

1. Recognition of the Tamils of Sri Lanka as a Nation, 2. Recognition of the existence of an identified homeland of the Tamils of Sri Lanka. 3. Recognition of the right of self-determination of the Tamil Nation. 4. Recognition of the right of citizenship as the fundamental rights of all Tamils who look upon The Island as their country.
