Four golds for Sri Lanka

Four Sri Lankan athletes, Asian double gold medalist Damayanthi Darsha, Rohan Pradeep Kumara, Shantha Mendis and Sunil Jayaweera have won gold medals at the Thailand Open Athletic Championship held during the last two days.

Darsha had a easy win in her event 200 sprint with time of 23.76 seconds while Rohan Pradeep spared 46.28 seconds to win the first place in his pet 400 m event.

Mendis won the first place in the 3000 m steeple chase while Sunil Jayaweera spared 3 minutes 50.44 seconds in his attempt to the gold medal.

Meanwhile Prasanne Amarasekera (400m), Asoka. Jayasundara (400m Hurdle), U.I. Bandare (3000 SC) A.B.P. Nishantha (Javelin) and Chaminda Wijekoon (1500m) won silver medals in their respective events.

Interestingly this was the first international appearance of Asoka Jayasundara who was banned for two years after being found guilty of using banned drugs.
