Quentin to coach Galle RFC this season

Quentin Israel, the famous rugby coach, has taken up Galle Rugby Football Club. He is all out to make this team a top rugby-playing club. Kumar Abeywardene has done the best, by picking this veteran coach Quentin Israel to handle them in the very first year of A division rugby.

Israel played rugger for Trinity College in 1953 and 54 with players like L. L. Vitarane, R. M. Aluwihare, B. G. Jacob, C. Niketenne, Maurice A. Perera, M. G. Ratwatte, N. de Soysa to name a few. He started his club career only in 1958, when he was invited by one of his schoolmates Babu Jacob. And he played for Havelocks SC from that year to 1965 as a centre-three quarter and was a member of the 1961 cup winning team of Havelocks. He was also in the All Ceylon pool and the squad.

At one time he was the president of Havelocks SC and also coached them. In his first year of coaching, he helped the D. S. Senanayake MV win the Tyrell Mutthiah trophy. Later he coached S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia. He was the man behind the success of the Thomians in seventies and eighties.

He took over the Trinitians, his old school, and gave off his best and helped the school to win the Bradby on five occasions in his six years of coaching. He retired from Trinity College a few months back. Galle RFC invited him at the correct time, to help them, where he is happy and said that he feels that he can do a good job with the Galle RFC.

Quentin was also a top class hockey player during his school days, he led the school team in 1954. Some of his team mates were E. C. Fernando, I. G. de Geddes, B. G. Jacobs, D. P. Lamb, F. Omar, D. R. Rajalingam, M. K. Ashraff Ali, U. T. Molligoda, U. C. Pananawela.
