By Rex Clementine

Cricket umpire Steve Bucknor is set to create a new record when he takes to the field today to officiate the third and the final Test Match between Sri Lanka and England at Old Trafford. An ICC release said that Bucknor who is in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires will be standing in the third and the final Test between the countires.

The Test will be Bucknor’s 67th surpassing England’s Dicky Bird’s 66 Test appearances. Bird retired from international cricket in 1996.

Bucknor officiated his last Test in Lahore between Pakistan and New Zealand and was set to make the record in the third and the final Test between the two countries in Karachi, but lost out on the opportunity after the game was abandoned after a bomb went off near the team hotel.

Bucknor is considered as the most experienced umpire along with England’s David Shephered having officiated in three World Cup finals in 1992, 1996 and 1999.
