1559 die in road accidents
Private buses, the main killer

The Colombo Traffic Police disclosed that 1559 persons have been killed in road accidents last year.

The majority of them have been killed in accidents involving private buses.

According to statistics the numbers of private bus accidents were 391 and SLCTB buses 91.

Car accidents have claimed 117 lives, motorcycles 351, lorries 344, vans 209 and three wheelers 148. The percentage of drivers of vehicles involved in these accidents found guilty was around 95%.

The cause for fatal accidents had been reckless driving, under the influence of liquor and other violations of traffic laws.

Police have filed 1559 cases in courts against such reckless drivers.

Police are yet to work out figures of road accidents this year.
