Action against errant corp. bosses in the pipeline

The government will direct the Attorney-General and the Legal Draftsman to examine audit reports with a view to taking legal action against public sector officials responsible for causing heavy losses to the state, the government parliamentary group was told last week.

There was a vigorous demand for such action led by the Gampaha District MP Sarathchandra Rajakaruna at last week’s government parliamentary meeting chaired by the prime minister. He said that there was a strong public demand for action particularly against corporation heads who had mismanaged state enterprises during the PA regime.

Rajakaruna who was backed by several other government MPs urged the premier to direct the Attorney-General to file action against the offending officials and bring them to account.

He said that proceedings against offenders should not be restricted to prosecutions and urged that meaningful action to recover losses should be taken

The prime minister said that appointing commissions of inquiries served no purpose and said that he will direct the Attorney-General and Legal Draftsman to examine the possibilities of remedial action on the basis of the Auditor-General’s report.

He said that he would require these officials to report back to government at an early date.
