|Accolades for Kollupitiya crimes OIC
DIG (STF) Nimal Gunatilleke has written to IGP Lucky Kodituwakku commending the prompt action taken by OIC (Crimes) Kollupitiya Police, Inspector Shantha Wickremasinghe to arrest a suspect and recover a bag with a mobile phone, cash and other valuables worth Rs. 40,000 stolen from a female company executive in Colombo.
DIG Gunatilleke says in his letter that he had met the victim at a social outing and on being told that her bag was stolen, he had asked whether she had made a police complaint. She had replied that there was no purpose in making a complaint as the police would never be able to arrest the culprit and trace her bag.
However, on being persuaded by the DIG, the victim had lodged a complaint with the Kollupitiya police where within 24 hours IP Wickremasinghe and his officers were able to arrest a suspect and recover the bag. "What is important in this investigation is the manner in which IP Wickremasinghe responded to this complaint and kept the complainant informed of the progress until such time the suspect was arrested", DIG Gunatilleke says in his letter to the police chief.
He adds: "I am bringing this to your notice as very often the good work done by the police go unnoticed and even minor lapses are highlighted in the media."
Contacted by The Sunday Island, IP Wickremasinghe said he was able to get at the suspect through two calls he had made to friends using the stolen mobile phone. The theft had occurred at a gym in the city and the suspect also patronised it. (Suresh)
