The Pin Fernando Trophy tournament at the RCGC was inaugurated in 1979 to commemorate Sri Lanka’s greatest Amateur Golfer W. P. Fernando.

Over the years it was the only major tournament which was not sponsored as the club wished to honour him by providing the winner and runner up replicas from club funds.

However, last year the RCGC requested United Tractors to sponsor the tournament due to their close association with the sport. Several other prizes were added for special achievements in the qualifying round and the tournament was a great success.

This year, as an added attraction, the prizes and mementos on offer will include an air ticket to Bangkok from Gabo Travels for a hole-in-one during the qualifying round.

The qualifying round began yesterday (13) and over 270 competitors were seen in action.

The 32 best qualifiers will play in the Match Play Rounds while the finals will take place in October 2002.
