Arjun Fernando SLTA’s new selection committee chairman

Arjun Fernando a former tennis star who was ranked 220 in the world in 1980 has been nominated by the Sports Minister Johnston Fernando as the Selection Committee Chairman for the term 2002/2003. Fernando has taken over the reins from P. S. Kumara.

In 1979, he had beaten several world recognised players including Australia’s No. 1 and Wimbledon Doubles Champion Paul McNamee.

Kumara during his term of office had introduced a selection criteria and as a result several junior players were given life in the sport to boost the country’s junior tennis. And it is hoped that Fernando will follow suit.

Aruna Seneviratne and Arjan Perera are the new additions to the Selection Committee while Isuru Gunasekera and Iqbal Bin Issack retain their places from the previous committee.
