Nirosh retains chess title

Nirosh de Silva retained the national title once again when he emerged winner in the country’s most prestigious chess tournament which was worked off at the Chess Federation Headquarters in Colombo over the weekend.

De Silva had 8.5 points from 13 games while the second place was shared by four competitors Lakshman Wijesuriya, T.D.R Peiris, C.K.de Fonseka and Athula Russell. G.C Anurudha finished sixth.

According to Derrick Perera, president Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, the six players have qualify for the World Chess Olypiad to be held in Slovenia from 25 October to 11 November.

Vineetha Wijesuriya emerged winner in the women’s event with 8. 5 points. The others who finished among the top four were Ayodya Liyanagedara (second place), Thushari Malwatte (third place) and Chandima Wijewardane (fourth place).

Interestingly Sri Lanka’s new coach Sunil Weeramanthri also took part in the tournament but didn’t enjoy much success. (Ravi)
