Action plan for CP

The Clean Industry Development Project (CLIND) funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and implemented through the Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Ministry works in collaboration with a wide range of public and private sector stakeholders to develop a national strategy, action plan and public policies by which Sri Lanka can achieve cleaner production (CP) and increased production efficiency and international competitiveness, and ultimately sustainable development, that cleaner production makes possible.

Developing that strategy and action plan have been based especially on the advise of representatives from many private sector firms and organizations as to the combination of awareness, policies, incentives, rewards, pressures and other conditions that will change the perspectives of business managers to see CP as being in the best business interest of the firm.

A national strategy and clear public policy to achieve cleaner production will be important elements in stimulating economic growth for Sri Lanka and making Sri Lankan goods and services competitive, at home and abroad. Success of the strategy will depend on the combined efforts of many stakeholders, including government policy makers, educators, industry associations and others. Because achieving cleaner production requires creating awareness and changing perspectives on a broad front. The media is needed to play a critical role in this effort.

An important component of the project has been the production of a set of communications materials for the print and broadcast media, which are to be disseminated through the newly established National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC). These materials, which include an educational poster, booklet, television spots and radio spots, explain the concepts and relevance of cleaner production to business and public audiences. They have been produced by reputed Sri Lankan professionals working in collaboration with CLIND consultants and the NCPC.

These materials will be presented and handed over to the NCPC on Tuesday at Colombo. (Press Release)
