| Sports Minister directs AAA to recruit foreign coach by Champika Fernando With a view of putting an end to the existing differences between local coaches, the Minister of Sports Johnston Fernando has directed the Ametuer Athletics Association (AAA) to obtain the services of a foreign coach soon. Minister Fernando speaking at a press conference held a day after the closing ceremony of the 14th Asian Athletic Championships said that the country would have bagged a few more medlas if not for the not for the differences between the local coaches. According to the minister the differences forced several athletes to boycott the national selection trial to pick the relay team. Three women sprinters, Sriyani Kulawansa, Damayathi Darsha and Pradeep Herath did not turn up for the trails which forced the national selectors to drop them from the team on disciplinary grounds. "This pathetic situation has existed over the years. The only option is to bring all national athletes under a foreign coach," said Minister Fernando adding that the move will be put into practice before the end of next month. He further said that he had instructed the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) to look for a experienced coach as soon as possible. "The expenses of the coach will be born by the Ministry and all national athletes will be put under his supervision," Minister further said. Expressing his view on the performances of the national team at the concluded athletics event the Minister said that he was satisfied with the performances of athletes specially with Susanthika Jayasinghe. "What more can we expect from them," Minister said. Meanwhile the Minister also has granted permission to the AAA to use the current track at the Sugathadasa Stadium for training purposes of athletes. "The gates will be opened for them hereafter," Minister further asserted. |
