Police Sports Club will play its final match in the ‘Caltex’ Trophy League Rugby Tournament when they scrum down with Havelocks Sports Club on 18 August at Police Park.

According SSP Nimal Lewke, secretary Police Sports Club, former Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union president and ex-Police SC skipper Anton Benedict will be the chief guest at the match.

Benedict was the captain of Police SC and Havelocks SC in 1972 and 1978 respectively.

Incidentally it was under the captaincy of Benedict that Sri Lanka Police won the Clifford Cup for the first time. The Late Kavan Rambukwella was the Police coach at that time.

In 1978 Benedict captained Havelocks Sports Club in which year the Park Club won a tripple crown.

In 1980 Benedict was appointed as coach of the Police team and later went on to coach the national side.

As a mark of respect for his contributions to Police rugby the Police Rugby Committee headed by DIG Daya Jayasundara, Secretary Nimal Lewke, both members of Anton Benedict’s winning team in 1972, has invited Benedict to grace this occasion. His colleagues of the 1972 champion Police team will be present to receive Anton at this function.
