Referees demand adequate security to conduct schools final

by Ravi Nagahawatte

The Sri Lanka Rugby Referee’s Society (SLRRS) has demanded adequate security from The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association(SLSRFA), the organisers of the Milo Inter School Under 19 President’s Trophy Tournament, if the final between Royal and Wesley is to take place today.

According to Wimal Perera, Secretary SLRRS, game will only take place if the referees are happy with the security situation at the ground. Security at match venues became the talking point in the rugby circles following clash between players and spectators at the semi final fixture between St.Peter’s and Wesley which the later won.

"We have asked security for the referees, match officials and the players. The SLRRS has to be given the assurance that protection will be given to the people involved in the match even after the it is over. If the security situation is not adequate there is a good possibility of the referee not starting the match," said Perera.

An official of the SLSRFA when contacted said that the SLRRS had been promised adequate security at the venue. The official further added that over 100 security personnel will be deployed at the venue to check on crowd hooliganism.
