Police arrested underworld gangster ‘Moratu Saman’ and five of his associates while they were assaulting a couple they had abducted and held in a house at Katubedda last Friday afternoon.

SSP (Mt. Lavinia) W. P. Dayaratne told ‘The Sunday Island’, that on information received by police he sent a special team to arrest the underworld figure and his henchmen.

Police also recovered a Browning pistol and several rounds of assorted ammunition including T56.

Police investigations are continuing to figure out the exact motive behind the abduction and whether it was done on a contract.

Moratu Saman was arrested many a time by police in connection with a spate of suspected underworld activities but had been released due to the lack of evidence.

Some time back, an unidentified gang opened fire at Moratu Saman’s vehicle but he escaped with major injuries.

One of his associates who was in the luxury vehicle was killed.
