US team here to identify Lankan military training needsA team from the National Defence University and the office of the Secretary of Defence of the United States of America is visiting Sri Lanka. They will be here until September 4. The team, headed by Ambassador Robin Raphel, Senior Vice President of the National Defence University and former Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, will assess the Sri Lankan militarys educational and training needs and identify potential areas for future U.S. assistance.
Ambassador Wills speaking about the visit said, "This assessment teams visit is a result of the meeting between President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last July in Washington. It is yet another demonstration of United States support for the government and people of Sri Lanka as they seek to end the conflict and reform their institutions to address the needs of the country in the1 years to come."
