by Kalinga Weeakkody
A doctor was shot in the head and killed by two unknown gunmen at Jayanthipatumaga in Pamunuwa, Maharagama on Thursday night around 9.45.

Acting OIC Maharagama police D.H.Jayasena told ‘The Island’ that the doctor carrying the clothes to his new-born baby that day was boarding his vehicle at his home to proceed to Sri Jayawardenapura hospital where his wife gave birth to a baby on that evening.

Police said that so far they have not taken a statement from the wife of the deceased.

The victim had been identified as W.A.W. Seneviratne (38) a private practitioner hailing from Eheliyagoda. He had run two dispensaries in Boralesgamuwa and Arawwela.

Sources said that the neighbours who had heard gun shots have told police that they saw two men taking to their heels after the shots had been fired.

Police suspect that the killing had been carried out by a 9mm pistol.

The OIC said that the suspects had fired at close range to the victim’s ear and neck areas.

Police recovered three empty cartridges from the place.

Though the neighbours have rushed the victim to the hospital he had succumbed to his injuries on admission.

Investigations are continuing under the supervision of DIG Sirisena Herath and SP (Crimes) Cecil Fernando.
