The "Pavithra Ganga" programme introduced by Minister of Irrigation and Water Management, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, is a timely action to protect our water bodies from pollution.

There are hundred and three rivers in Sri Lanka particularly Kelani Ganga, Mahaweli and its Pingaoya, Deduruoya, Menik Ganga are worst affected due to dumping waste, sand mining and unauthorized constructions; countries all over the world have adopted Pavithra Ganga/clean rivers programme in order to focus special attention to protect country’s river system.

We as users of water from Mahaweli and Deduruoya, thank the Minister for this action taken to identity water and related environmental issues and establish priorities for corrective action to be implemented through collaborative mechanisms.
