Ex-Justice Minister Devanayagam dies

Former Justice Minister K. W. Devanayagam passed away yesterday. He was 94 years old at the time of his demise.

He first contested Kalkudah seat as an Independent in 1947 hut was defeated. In March 1965 he contested Kalkudah again, but this time as a UNP candidate and was returned with a majority of 470 votes. At the May 1970 general election he retained his seat with a majority of nearly 3000 against a rival from the Federal Party. He was elected for Kalkudah again in 1977 by a slender 555 majority and was made a minister.

A Roman Catholic he was educated at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, where he captained both the cricket and football teams in 1930. Later taking to tennis he became the East Ceylon Champion.

On leaving school Mr. Devenayagam joined the Law College and passed out as a proctor and practised for many years at Batticaloa.

His body lies at his Kalubowila residence and funeral arrangements will be notified later.
