LTTE action takes away fishermen’s only livelihood

The LTTE had abducted 13 Muslim fishermen fishing in the Wakaneri Tank along Punani Road in Valaichchenai and had threatened them with death if they were to be engaged in fishing in the future.

Later the LTTE had seized their fishing gear and had released them.

Following the release the fishermen had complained regarding the abduction by the LTTE to the Valaichchenai police, last Sunday (19).

These fishermen had been abducted last Thursday (18) while fishing in the Wakaneri Tank by an LTTE gang who had arrived in a boat.

The fishermen thereafter had been taken to a camp within the LTTE controlled area where the LTTE threatened them with death if they carried out fishing in the future.

The only livelihood of these fishermen was fishing in the Wakaneri Tank and now that they were prohibited from fishing, the fishermen were unable to find the means for their livelihood, informed sources from the eastern province said.
