Chief suspect in Katunayake bomb blast to be indicted

The Attorney General will shortly indict, P. Nirmala Ranjan (Sea Tiger), the chief suspect of the Katunayake airbase bomb blast, in July 2001.

Riyaz Hamza, State Counsel yesterday requested the Supreme Court for further time to finalise the documents, pertaining to the indictment.

He said that the investigations by the CID were over. The CID has submitted extracts pertaining to the investigation in 6000 pages, in 15 volumes.

The suspect Ranjan had filed a fundamental rights violation application against the officer-in-charge of the CID Senaka Kumarasinghe and the Director CID, alleging illegal arrest and illegal detention. He had been arrested at Katuwa, Negombo, on October, 8, 2001, by the CID.

V. Yogaswaran supported the application.

The Supreme Court granted the Attorney General time till April 28, 2002, to finalise the documents pertaining to the indictment.

The Bench comprised the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake and Justice H. S. Yapa.
