Crime Report by Kalinga Weerakkody MAHARAGAMA - An underworld criminal identified as Wedi Suda and six of his associates, wanted in connection with a spate of vehicle hijackings, killings and theft of gold jewellery, were remanded till February 29 after Wedi Suda they were produced before the Homagama Magistrates Courts. The detection was made by OIC Shantha Jayalath, of the Special Squad of the Maharagama Police, under the supervision of SP Sisil Perera and DIG (Crimes and Operations) Sirisena Herath. The gang had committed these crimes in Maharagama, Piliyandala, Mirihana, Kohuwala, Kirulapana, Dehiwala and Mt.Lavinia. Police recovered a 3.8 mm pistol, which was in the main suspects possession. This pistol was earlier used by a drug dealer, identified as Kota Daya, who had been arrested by the Police sometime back. Police have also recovered three hijacked vehicles and gold jewellery worth around Rs.50,000, which had been sold to a private Jeweller. Three suspects have been identified as drug addicts and sources said that although the Police had arrested them on several occasions, they had been enlarged on bail. |
