| Programme to restore abandoned state owned office buildings
in Vanni The Ministry of Vanni Rehabilitation has undertaken another priority programme, the restoration of abandoned state owned office buildings in the Vanni region. Under this programme, district level state offices will be initially repaired with extended facilities to re-commence office activities at the places of origin. A section of the destroyed Mullativu District Secretariat was repaired at a cost of Rs. 3 million. This office was earlier functioning in a village called Puthukudiyirppu 16 km. away from the original place. Secretary to the Vanni Rehabilitation Ministry R. Tharmakulasingam said the programme follows the directive of Vanni Rehabilitation Minister Noordeen Mashoor. Nearly Rs. 100 million could be required to fully reconstruct this damaged District Secretariat building complex, he said. A proposal to this effect was submitted to a newly created World Bank assisted North East Emergency Recontruction Project known as NEERP implemented by the North East Provincial Council. The Ministry has assisted nearly 2000 displaced families who were resettled at Mullativu and other adjoining areas. The Ministry has also spent about Rs. 1.0 million to repair a damaged government building to house the Adampan Divisional Secretariat office. Meanwhile, measures are being taken to reconstruct the damaged Musali DS office in the Mannar district. |
