Sri Lankan women’s ruggerite K.A.S.L Jayasinghe put her country’s male rugby players to shame by scoring the best try at the recently concluded Hong Kong sevens rugby tournament in Hong Kong.

According to Hisham Abdeen, women’s team coach, Jayasinghe had impressed the tournament organisers when she made a scorching 80 meter run and scored a try in the team’s match against China. Jayasinghe’s feat had been acknowledged by the tournament organisers when they presented her with a gift at a farewell dinner.

The organisers of the tournament had been so impressed by the Sri Lankan lass that they had also presented the team with free tickets to witness the men’s tournament. The two tournaments took place at separate venues till the final day of the tournament where the matches were played at the Number One Stadium in Hong Kong.

Arjuna Dharmadasa, manager Sri Lankan women’s team, told ‘The Island’ that Jamie Scott of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) had made arrangements to pay the entrance fee on behalf of the Sri Lankan women’s team because they played well.

The Sri Lanka women’s team finished eighth out of 10 teams. They were later pooled in the Asian Dragon Plate competition where they won one game from three outings.
