Mashoor claims Badurdeen’s guards opened fire

Vanni Rehabilitation Minister Noordeen Mashoor said that bodyguards of SLMC colleague Rishard Badurdeen opened fire during recent incidents at St. Andrew’s College, Puttalam. In a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the minister said that Badurdeen whose bodyguards went on rampage, was appointed as a co-ordinating officer by Rehabilitation Minister Jayalath Jayawardena to his ministry. But Jayawardena or the prime minister’s office failed to inform him of the appointment.

Mashoor said: "It is my responsibility to co-ordinate, assist and implement rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement projects."

He pointed out that Badurdeen should not have been appointed a co-ordinator without consulting him. He has also questioned Minister Jayawardena’s right to make such an appointment.

Mashoor in a letter dated April 11 to the PM said that in terms of Gazette Extraordinary No. 1225/19 — 2002 dated Feruary 28, 2002, the main function assigned to him to assist was to the Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees in respect of Vanni Rehabilitation.

"Several complaints received by me in relation to the distribution of dry rations were referred to Jayalath Jayewardena, Minister in charge of the Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees and to the Secretary of his Ministry by me for necessary action. I also personally discussed with him on several occasions and settled a number of issues.
