Govt. UNDP sign N/E rehab pact

Soon after the signing of the Memorandum Of Understanding between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE in February 2002, action was initiated to formulate proposals to build up the north and east, areas which were subject to damage and destruction. The initial work was carried out through special studies made by persons of repute. In this regard it was noted that basic to the rehabilitation effort is the building up of the administrative capacity of the area.

Consequently the major thrust of this project is on the building up of capacities in the from of personnel, mobility and equipment. The wider programme for rehabilitation of the area would be based on the recent needs estimate work done by several experts.

The total cost of the project is over US$ 700,000. The financial input by the government through the commissioner general amounts to Rs. 14.7 million per year for a two-year period.
