Kelaniya — a robbers’ paradise

Kelaniya once a truly peaceful area is today a veritable Chicago with gang robberies taking place almost daily especially in Kiribathgoda, Dalugama and areas around the Vidyalankara Campus.

It is no exaggeration to say that during the last 3-4 months at least one out of every four houses in the Dalugama stretch of the Kandy Rd., Lumbini Mawatha and St. Jude’s Mawatha has been robbed. The gang is so heavily armed that victims just do not put up a resistance or raise cries. The robberies invariably take place in the wee hours of the morning between 2 and 5 a.m.

The strange thing is that despite the frequency and the audacity of the robberies the Peliyagoda police have not so far caught a single robber, despite clear pattern and the limited time frame of the robberies.

It is as if there were no police station in Kelaniya. Residents who live in fear of their lives and wonder whether the UNF from which they expected a better law and order situation has abdicated it’s writ over Kelaniya.

Over to you, Interior Minister and I.G.P. the situation is beyond endurance.
