Strict police security arrangements for today’s May Day — IGP

Strict police security arrangements will be in place today for the May Day, Inspector General of Police, I. E. Anandarajah said yesterday (30).

He said that 5000 armed police officers will be deployed in different parts of Colombo. In addition rebel squads also would be deployed. Special Criminal Investigations Department officers would be deployed in places where the May Day rallies will be held.

In addition Police Headquarters officers have been instructed to check all suspicious vehicles loitering in the Colombo city. Police mobile patrol units will be deployed in front and behind the rallies in order to provide security to politicians participating in May Day rallies. The May Day rally of the People’s Alliance will commence at the Chandra Silva Playground, Kotte and proceed to Campell Park where the rally would be held.

The Nava Vamansika Peramuna, the Prajathanthravadi Wamansika Peramuna and the Socialist Alternative group will hold their May Day rally at the Price Park playground, Colombo.

The ceremony of the Brotherhood of Jesus Christ will be held today at Stanley Janz playground.

The commemoration ceremony of former President, R. Premadasa will be held at Armour Street, Colombo.

The United National Front will hold a cultural exhibition today at the Colombo Municipal grounds.

The Tamil National Alliance will hold its May Day rally today in Jaffna. Special security arrangements have been made for this rally.

Before the commencement of the rally it will march from Nallur to Jaffna, police sources said.

In Batticaloa a May Day rally will be held at Kattankudi organised by the three-wheeler association.
