LTTE about to begin Eelam War IV, SU says

Sihala Urumaya (SU) will launch a door-to-door campaign in Kiribathgoda today "to inform the general public of the imminent danger to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country posed by the so-called peace talks between the government and the LTTE". Udaya Gammanpila, SU Media Secretary said in a media statement that the party will conduct this campaign throughout the country.

The SU states that it has reliable information that the LTTE is planning a major attack either on a military base or a key target in the capital in the event that the government refuses to agree to an interim arrangement that meets their aspirations. Furthermore, the SU predicts that when such an attack takes place the LTTE will resort to its old strategy of blaming it on disenchanted cadres and return to the negotiating table in a position of strength.

"On previous occasions when such attacks took place, the relevant governments were caught unprepared and the country had to suffer heavy losses. In 1990, 678 policemen lost their lives and in 1995 two naval ships were destroyed. It is clear that there is absolutely no truth in the rosy picture that is being painted by the government and certain sections of the media regarding the prospects for peace. The people need to be correctly informed and this is why we decided to launch this door-to-door campaign," Gammanpila states.

The SU has also organised a seminar titled "Eelam yuddhaya yali erambe: Uthura kotiyata, Dakuna suddata" (The Eelam War erupts once again: the North to the Tiger, the South to the whites) on June 24, at 3.30 pm at the New Town Hall, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.
